  19. QUESTION:  After experiencing several episodes of seizures, my cherished
  20. cousin is to have a test called an "encephalogram".  She calls me every day to
  21. discuss this, but I know nothing about the test, and wish I could offer some
  22. more support.  Could you explain a bit about this test to me?  Is there any
  23. danger to it and what are they looking for?  I appreciate your column very
  24. much and hope you will be able to help me now.

  28. ANSWER:  Recurrent seizure episodes raise the possibility that your cousin may
  29. have epilepsy.  Not all convulsions are seizures and not all seizures may be
  30. caused by epilepsy, so testing is now in order to try and discover the true
  31. cause of the problem.  The "electroencephalograph" (or EEG) is a graph that
  32. displays the electrical action of the brain cells.  The graph displays these
  33. as brain waves, and special brain wave patterns are typical of epilepsy and
  34. allow a rather precise diagnosis.
  35.      To prepare for the test, a number of electrodes are taped to the head, to
  36. detect the electrical activity.  Usually a test will take from 30 minutes to 1
  37. hour, but depending upon the findings, it may be continued for a longer time.
  38. Patients may be exposed to flashing lights or other sounds and images to
  39. provoke a seizure, and often a video camera is used to film the patient's
  40. activity.  An EEG is a painless and safe procedure.
